The Liberal Party prime minister has been criticized for his “woke” policies – woke being progressive and liberal ideologies that seek to correct perceived injustices over race, LGBTQ+ and other rights – including, recently, from the country’s retired lieutenant general, Michel Maisonneuve, and his wife, Barbara.

Trudeau replied to criticism from opposition politicians that he is too “woke” at a Liberal Party convention last year. He told delegates: “They either say investing in Canadians is a waste of money or that our policies are too woke.” And added, in apparent disbelief: “Too woke?”

Canada is also aiming to become net-zero by 2050, with the government saying in a statement that it would be a “move to a cleaner, prosperous economy [that] needs to be both an immediate priority and a sustained effort over the years and decades ahead. To meet this long-term goal, Canada needs to keep innovating, strengthening, and building on existing measures.”

The government added: “That is why Canada is committed to achieving net-zero emissions by the year 2050 and why the government adopted the Canadian Net-Zero Emissions Accountability Act to provide an accountability and transparent framework to deliver on this target.”
