Shell has officially announced it will close all of its hydrogen fuel stations in California. This follows earlier news that Shell discontinued plans to expand its hydrogen fueling infrastructure in the state. Analysts claim this is a sign of the broader challenges within the energy sector, including supply complications.

Shell’s decision to close its hydrogen fuel stations will seriously affect the use of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in the state. This closure reduces the available infrastructure for hydrogen refueling. This could delay people from adopting FCEVs and could also cause inconvenience for those who already have them.

Previously, Shell had committed to expanding its hydrogen fueling infrastructure in California. They used substantial state incentives to achieve this. However, they have recently reversed several of these decisions. This U-turn includes abandoning a $40 million project for 48 new stations in 2023.

Speaking about the decision, the VP of the company, Andrew Beard, claimed “hydrogen supply complications and other external market factors” were the reason. This includes difficulties in getting permits, sourcing green hydrogen, and high construction costs. This decision comes after a number of shake-ups in Shell’s approach to hydrogen fueling.
Cost of Hydrogen Fuel and Infrastructure

Compared to other energy sources, hydrogen is quite expensive and needs a lot of infrastructure to distribute it. The construction cost of a single hydrogen station is estimated to be around $2 million. As such, recovering this investment has been difficult for Shell, especially given the relatively low number of FCEVs in California.

Additionally, it is also difficult for consumers to recover the cost of their vehicles. A new hydrogen fuel car can cost anywhere between $50,000 and $60,000. However, even if it is a first-generation car, a used hydrogen fuel car will usually only sell for $15,000 to $25,00, which is a clear decline.
Price Increases and Consumer Impact

There have also been significant price increases for hydrogen fuel, which have created more problems. For example, the price at some stations shot up to $36 per kg, making hydrogen significantly more expensive than electricity for electric vehicles (EVs). This price hike affects consumers directly, meaning that FCEVs are not as economically attractive as EVs.
Legal Disputes and Reliability Concerns

Outside of the costs, there have also been several notable legal disputes. One of these includes Iwatani, a gas company, who filed a lawsuit against Nel, their equipment provider, for giving them allegedly faulty equipment. This has made the hydrogen fuel environment even more challenging.
Shell’s Strategic Pivot

As a result, Shell is moving its hydrogen strategy towards sectors where it can have more of a competitive advantage, like heavy-duty transport. This allows Shell to focus on areas where hydrogen can have the most immediate impact, such as in reducing emissions from long-haul trucking and freight transport. These sectors are less suited to battery-electric solutions because of the range or refueling time constraints.
Industry Commitment to Hydrogen

Despite the problems, many automakers and energy companies are very invested in hydrogen technology. Several companies are continuing to develop hydrogen-powered trucks and buses. Other manufacturers are working together to create stronger hydrogen infrastructure, showing they still believe in hydrogen’s future.

Shell’s decision to close the stations, along with other changes in the FCEV industry, has led to many questions about the future of this vehicle in California. Globally, people’s attitudes towards hydrogen fuel are mixed. Countries like China and Japan have made hydrogen fuel a crucial part of their energy transition strategies. One of the main reasons is simply because Toyota and Honda, which are both based in Japan, are some of the few car manufacturers making hydrogen cars.

Additionally, to support the industry, huge technological improvements and breakthroughs in hydrogen production, storage, and distribution are needed. Another possible way to improve things is by creating a supportive regulatory framework.
