The Republican National Committee (RNC) draft resolution designating former President Donald Trump as the party’s presumed nominee has been met with opposition.
Trump Prefers the Electoral Process the “Old Fashioned” Way
On Thursday, January 25, the front-runner Republican candidate voiced his disapproval of the action on his social media site, Truth Social. He expressed his desire to follow the “Old Fashioned” path through the election process and finish it “off AT THE BALLOT BOX.”
Finish the Process off at the Ballot Box
“While I greatly appreciate the Republican National Committee (RNC) wanting to make me their PRESUMPTIVE NOMINEE, and while they have far more votes than necessary to do it, I feel, for the sake of PARTY UNITY, that they should NOT go forward with this plan, but that I should do it the “Old Fashioned” way, and finish the process off AT THE BALLOT BOX,” Trump remarked.
Haley Determined to Continue in the Race
Nikki Haley, a former governor of South Carolina, is the lone person standing up to the former President. Trump has solidified his chances of receiving the party’s presidential nomination by winning the New Hampshire primary and the Iowa caucus. Haley has made up her mind to run again in the contest, even after she lost to Trump in the Granite State by an 11-point margin.
Resolution Withdrawn Due to Rising Concerns Among Trump Allies
The resolution was sponsored by Maryland RNC committeeman David Bossie, but he withdrew it because of growing concerns among Trump backers, according to people familiar with the situation who spoke with CNN. Proceeding with the resolution while Haley is still a contender may give the impression that the front-runner was attempting to rig the results by having only two states cast ballots.
Millions of Rep Voters Should Decide Party Nominee Instead of a Bunch of Washington Insiders
Haley has received 17 delegates thus far, whereas Trump has only received 32. According to the current RNC rules, a contender has to receive 1215 delegates in order to be formally nominated by the party. Olivia Perez-Cubas, a spokesman for the Haley campaign, responded to the RNC resolution by saying that the party nominee should be chosen by millions of Republican people, not by a group of Washington insiders.
Can Trump Handle Being on Stage for 90 Minutes With Nikki Haley?
“If Ronna McDaniel wants to be helpful, she can organize a debate in South Carolina unless she’s also worried that Trump can’t handle being on the stage for 90 minutes with Nikki Haley,” the official said. Haley is trying to strengthen her campaign in her home state of South Carolina ahead of the primary on February 24, which she is winning by a significant margin, despite Trump’s increasing assaults.
RNC Hereby Declares President Trump as Our Presumptive 2024 Nominee
In the resolution, it is stated that the Republican National Committee “RESOLVED that the Republican National Committee hereby declares President Trump as our presumptive 2024 nominee for the office of President of the United States and from this moment forward moves into full general election mode welcoming supporters of all candidates as valued members of Team Trump 2024.”
Chairwoman McDaniel Doesn’t Offer Resolutions
This resolution is still only a resolution, according to an RNC spokesperson’s statement from earlier on Thursday; it does not represent the committee’s position. RNC members are the ones who propose resolutions like this one. In the statement, communications director Keith Schipper stated that Chairwoman McDaniel “does not offer resolutions.” “This will be taken up by the Resolutions Committee and they will decide whether to send this resolution to be voted on by the 168 RNC members at our annual meeting next week.”
